Peter Shilton supports fiancee Stephanie Hayward in council bid

England international footballer Peter Shilton said he would "never say never" to a role in politics after spending the night at an election count.

The ex-goalkeeper, who is England's most capped football player, was at the Colchester Borough Council count to support his fiancee Stephanie Hayward.

Ms Hayward was defeated in her bid for election in the Highwoods ward of Colchester.

Shilton, who now lives in Essex, did not rule out the possibility of a political role when asked if it was something he would consider.

"I've learned in life you can never say never," he said. "I've really enjoyed the experience and hopefully in the future I'll be there supporting Steph."
