Metal night at The Firefly in Worcester - 13.02.12

One of the hardest-working bands on the local scene (and a pretty good example to all others) is fast and furious Pershore metallers Fights And Fires. Now, athough they weren't on the bill at the Firefly in Worcester's Lowesmoor, they featured bands they'd made friends with as they've been touring round the country over the last few years - who of course return the favour by inviting Fights And Fires to play gigs with them - now that's what I call win-win!

It was a shame that a very early start (to pack in five bands on the night into one of the smallest venues on the local circuit) meant that I missed the two local acts - Cry Wolf (the reformed Farewell Vera) and Steady Pedro.

First up for me, on the night, were shouty emo-rockers The Living Daylights from Lincoln - who've done exactly the right thing that I always check with for 'out-of-area' acts - they've tapped into their local BBC Introducing scheme and as a result have landed BBC Radio 1 airplay and a slot at Reading a couple of years ago - full marks!

This was a mostly-metal themed evening and slotting into the genre smoothly were shouty rockers Napoleon from Exeter with some alarmingly nifty guitar licks and catchy riffs thrown into the mix - before the evening was closed off (well almost) by Our Time Down Here from Southampton who are pretty much regulars round these parts - I've seen them on the same bill as Fights And Fires at the Marrs Bar and Drummonds previously. They're an indie-metal outfit of real quality with an energetic, well-structured and varied set. They're touring themselves at the moment to launch their new album 'Midnight Mass' - where no doubt they'll bump into other bands and keep the contacts wagon rolling.

It's a great way to build up your network - and credit to Lee, Phil and Ryan of Fights And Fires for putting this gig together - they're just about to embark on their 13th tour - this time round Belgium, Italy, Austria and Switzerland - and I reckon that there's only Matt Woosey who can top that, but he's only got himself to look after - Fights And Fires are a four-piece metal outfit - fair play to them!
