The Pig & Drum, Worcester - 31.03.12
I really have to say that the best of local music at the moment seems to be found within about a twenty yard radius halfway up Lowesmoor in Worcester - so my gigging exploits kicked off with a tasty selection at the relaunched Pig 'n' Drum - one of the very few metal-friendly venues around the two counties.
It's been a while since I've seen the trio Absolute Ataxia - this bunch of blues-rockers have links via frontman Ben to acts like Highway 5 and the incredible Roxanne De Bastion - but gigs from Absolute Ataxia themselves have been in pretty much short supply recently. Absolute Ataxia are a band of total quality and superb musicianship - who play a set of feel-good rock 'n' roll originals with some tasteful covers thrown in for reassurance to the punter who's seeing them for the first time. But I know for a fact that they're a bunch of tunesmiths with a whole lot of potential and was tremendously impressed with their apologetically-introduced new 'pop-song' Scream - no need guys, this is a classic. More gigs please guys.
It was also wonderful to see the quiet confidence of the Chris Jones-fronted Time Of The Mouth developing in leaps and bounds. We've been following this incredibly young outfit for a while now - and although I'm still not sure that the band-name itself is something that's worth retaining, I reckon that these youngsters have a tremendous future ahead - if only as a Pegasus Bridge tribute act! I love their cracking new number Tears and I am in no doubt that these are superstars in the process of formation.
