Cumbrian farmer crushed by bull has ribcage rebuilt

A Cumbrian farmer who almost died after being crushed by a two-tonne bull is continuing his recovery after undergoing "revolutionary" surgery.

Lawrence Haygarth, who farms on fells near Tebay, suffered 17 broken ribs and other serious injuries when he was charged by the animal in October 2011.

Surgeons at Blackpool Victoria Hospital rebuilt his chest using titanium plates and screws, giving him a new lease of life.

"I'm actually going for walks up in the Howgills now whereas I couldn't do that before," said the 69-year-old. "And hopefully, I should get a lot better yet."
