Supreme Court ruling to have impact on divorces

A court has made a ruling that could have important implications for divorcing couples after it declared a wife should have access to her former husband's assets.

The Supreme Court said estranged wife Yasmin Prest was entitled to property owned by her ex-husband's companies.

Michael Prest, a Nigerian oil tycoon, had been fighting her claim for £17.5m of his fortune which was tied up in London properties which a private company of his owns.

Lord Sumpton, Supreme Court judge, made the ruling while Jeremy Posnansky QC, who represents Ms Prest, said it was an important decision.
