Farmer finally taps into water mains after 50 year wait

A farm in Greater Manchester has been connected to the mains water supply for the first time, ending a farmer's 50 year wait for running water.

Doug Goulbourne moved into his farm in Hollingworth in Tameside in 1962, but had only been served by a 166-year-old water pump, which took water from a nearby spring.

He said the spring was "not always reliable" and could freeze in the winter or dry up in the summer.

The connection to the network is part of a £3m scheme by United Utilities to extend the water supply to remote properties in the area.
