MP 'lied over Northampton Town Football Club loan'

Former Lib Dem borough councillor Brendan Glynane has said he and others who raised concerns about the loan from Northampton Borough Council to Northampton Town Football Club were "lied to" by the then leader David Mackintosh.

Mr Glynane was speaking during the authority's audit committee, which was discussing an internal report which said the borough council lacked full information on the risks of the loan.

But Mr Glynane, who was a councillor at the time, said they were told "due diligence was carried out".

The majority of the £10.25m, paid to the club under its previous ownership, has gone missing.

Mr Glynane said the actions of Mr Mackintosh, now the Conservative MP for Northampton South, and his fellow cabinet member at the time of the loan in 2013 were "shameful".

A spokesman for David Mackintosh said: "Any actions David took in regards to the loan as leader were taken in good faith based on the expert advice and information supplied to him by officers of the council."
