Ellesmere farm produces UK's first quinoa crop

South American crop quinoa has been grown on a Shropshire farm.

It is believed to be the first successful commercial production of the crop in the UK.

Food scientist Stephen Jones said he started to experiment with the grain on his family farm in Ellesmere in 2006.

Many of the strains had failed, but he has now successfully used two varieties developed in the Netherlands.

Mr Jones said he expected to harvest 120 acres (48 hectares) of the crop in September.
