Melanie Road's killer caught after DNA from family found

A murder cold case from 1984 was solved after DNA from a family member was linked to the scene, police say.

Melanie Road was 17 when she was attacked as she made her way home from a night out in Bath in June 1984.

Christopher Hampton, 64, of Staple Hill, Bristol, has admitted killing the teenager when he appeared at Bristol Crown Court.

Det Ch Insp Julie MacKay said DNA from a family member led them to take a sample from Hampton.
