Royal Stoke University Hospital scales back major incident

A major incident has been scaled back at the Royal Stoke University Hospital, although doctors warned its emergency unit remained busy.

The hospital had raised its incident status to the highest level on Monday, due to "unprecedented" demand on A&E.

It blamed an outbreak of flu and norovirus in the area, particularly among elderly patients.

Medical director Robert Courtney-Harris said while pressures were improving, demand remained high and staff were on call in case the situation got worse.
