Birmingham Vaisakhi draws 50,000

More than 50,000 people have celebrated the founding of the Sikh community at an event in Birmingham.

Vaisakhi is the holiest day in the Sikh faith calendar and marks the day in 1699 when the order of the Khalsa was created.

The event, on Sunday, was also an opportunity for health professionals to offer check-ups to people from the south Asian community.

The West Midlands has the largest population of Sikhs in England and Wales, according to the last census.

The BBC's Laura May McMullan reports.
