500 jobs go as drug plant closes

The Sanofi pharmaceuticals factory at Fawdon in Newcastle is to close with the loss of 450 jobs.

The French-based company said it had been hit by cheap generic drugs and the European economic downturn.

Site director Bob Dungworth said he delivered a "very difficult" message to staff who were shocked and devastated.

The plant is due to close in 2015.
