Kayakers killed on River Tyne 'did not stand a chance'

The families of three men killed in a kayaking accident on the River Tyne have demanded urgent action to stop such a tragedy happening again.

Brothers Mark and Darren Thorpe died alongside their cousin, Gavin Bradley, when they were overwhelmed at a weir near Hexham.

An inquest heard they were probably taken by surprise by the "lethal" conditions, but the families say they are pleading for better river safety measures and the coroner has pledged to raise the issue.
