SDLP leader Alasdair McDonnell: 'Conall seen as my successor'

The SDLP leader Alasdair McDonnell has said that former party colleague Conall McDevitt was seen as successor to the party leader.

Mr McDevitt, who represented South Belfast as an MLA, announced his intention to resign on Wednesday.

Speaking outside the party headquarters to BBC reporter Kevin Sharkey, Dr McDonnell said that the SDLP is in grief at the loss of Mr McDevitt, but that he will remain a close advisor to the party.
