George Osborne defends welfare cuts plan

The Trades Union Congress has voted in favour of coordinated strike action against the government's planned spending cuts. Unison's General Secretary, Dave Prentis, says strike action would be a last resort, but he said members may be forced into it.

In the House of Commons, George Osborne defended the coalition' s proposals outlined in his emergency budget saying failure to implement them would put economic recovery at risk.
