Ed Miliband: Police cuts must be debated by MPs

The Labour leader Ed Miliband has said he is determined to force a vote in the Commons against the government's police cuts.

He wants ministers to drop plans to reduce force budgets by 20% over four years.

Policing Minister Nick Herbert said Labour had been planning to cut police budgets substantially too and accused Ed Miliband of hypocrisy.

But speaking in Lewisham in south London - one of the areas affected by rioting earlier this month - Mr Miliband said the police budget cuts were "reckless".
