The Queen and her prime ministers
When the Queen succeeded her father, George VI, 60 years ago, the first Prime Minister to serve her was more than three times her age and much more famous. Winston Churchill was the first of the Queen's 12 Prime Ministers and I've been talking to the historian Richard Thorpe about her relationships with all but the most recent of them. Let's start with her first Prime Minister, Winston Churchill. I asked Richard Thorpe, what was the relationship like between the young Queen Elizabeth and the 77 year old incumbent of No. 10?
This interview was broadcast on Sunday 5 August on BBC Radio 4's The Westminster Hour.
