GCSE grades and Ofqual: Graham Stuart and Brian Lightman
The dispute over whether students who sat GCSEs this summer were unfairly marked down, and regulator Ofqual saying that the grades were correct, "will undermine confidence" the Education Select Committee chairman said.
Graham Stuart said there was a "fundamental unfairness" in the results as he was asked how this could be rectified
General Secretary of the Association of School and College Leaders general secretary Brian Lightman said the system was not "fit for purpose" and more should have been done after initial warnings were flagged up.
They spoke after letters, leaked to the Times Education Supplement, showed Ofqual wrote to one of the exam boards - who set and mark the GCSEs - to say that grade boundaries might have to be moved significantly to bring results in line with expectations.
