MP salaries: Margaret Curran, Alan Duncan, Martin Narey
Being an MP should be "a cause not a career" said Labour's Margaret Curran as she debated calls to pay Parliamentarians more money.
Conservative Alan Duncan said it was "very very difficult" for MPs to look at pay in the light of the expenses scandals. But he said they would later have to "re-approach this issue in the spirit of enlightenment" to achieve a "Parliament of merit".
The pair debated a film from former civil servant Martin Narey who said salaries had fallen behind other professions, and that the Department of Heath has more than 40 staff earning at least £150,000.
