Could politicians live on £53 a week?

Ian Duncan Smith said on the Today programme on Monday that he could live on £53 a week.

His comments have kickstarted an online campaign which has gathered 45,000 signatures to get him to do just that.

Edwina Currie, former conservative MP, and Aditya Chakrabortty, economics leader writer for the Guardian, debate whether politicians need to live in the ordinary man's shoes to understand his plight, and whether it would make better policy.

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4's Today programme on Tuesday 2 April 2013.
