Commons vote backs gay marriage

The House of Commons has voted to introduce gay marriage by a margin of more than two to one, despite 161 MPs opposing the government's plans.

Even though Conservatives are split on the issue, 366 MPs voted in favour of it, with most Labour and Liberal Democrat MPs backing the move.

The Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Bill now goes before the House of Lords, where it is expected to be opposed.

Sean Curran reports.
