Lord Carlile: 'Rennard apology should be end to the matter'

The lawyer of a Liberal Democrat peer accused of sexual harassment has defended Lord Rennard's apology - and its timing.

Lord Rennard, who denies the claims, issued an apology on Thursday for "inadvertent" intrusion on "personal space".

Three of the four women who made allegations against him have said he should be expelled from the party.

Lord Carlile QC told Radio 4's World at One that two investigations had found that there should be no action against Lord Rennard on the grounds of insufficient evidence and that the apology "should be an end to the matter."
