Norman Smith: Why EU tax advice adds to UK tensions
BBC News channel chief political correspondent Norman Smith explains the wider political impact of the EU's critique of UK economic policy.
The European Commission has called on the UK to raise taxes on higher value properties, build more houses and adjust the Help to Buy scheme.
The commission said council tax bands should be revalued, which would put up bills for some people.
The advice, which got a fairly withering response from the UK's Treasury, comes at a time when there are already tensions over the UK's desire to renegotiate parts of its relations with the EU, and differences over who should succeed EC President Jose Manuel Barroso.
