General Lord Richards on the Andrew Marr Show

Former Chief of the Defence Staff General Lord Richards talked to the BBC's Andrew Marr about Afghanistan, Syria and the size of the British army.

"Finishing off Afghanistan is really important," said General Richards, "the framework is there and the commitment has been made... I'm not suggesting boots on the ground."

And on Syria, he commented: "I would like to see the UK play a role in the aerial campaign over Syria," voicing concern that without "Western boots on the ground" there, that defeating IS would take too long.

UK viewers can watch the Andrew Marr Show in full for seven days
