BBC Rewind: David Mellor loses Putney

There were wild scenes at the count in Putney as the sitting Conservative MP David Mellor lost his seat in the 1997 general election to Labour's Tony Colman. Mellor was a particularly public figure due to his role as a football pundit and having been the subject of some salacious tabloid headlines. His equally colourful protagonist, Sir James Goldsmith of the Referendum Party, led shouts of "Out! Out! Out!" as Mellor delivered his concession speech.
