Are democracy and Islam compatible?

A Lebanese former presidential candidate has insisted that democracy and Islam are compatible in society at a national level.

Speaking on BBC World News television, the human rights lawyer Chibli Mallat said that Islam could be interpreted in a way that accommodates democracy.

Democracy Day takes place on Tuesday 20 January, across BBC radio, TV and online.
