Ed Balls: 'The next Labour government will not raise VAT'

The shadow chancellor, Ed Balls, has pledged that Labour will not increase VAT if they win the general election.

He described VAT as the the tax "that hits everyone" and hits you everyday.

Speaking in Birmingham he said he was clear that "while millionaires have been given a big tax cut, working people are paying much more in tax after five years of the Conservatives".

Labour has repeatedly claimed the Conservatives would have to increase VAT due to the scale of spending cuts planned for after the general election.
