The dilemma over out-of-town shops

Helensburgh in Argyll is to get its first out-of-town supermarket, despite a campaign by some local people who wanted it to be located in the town.

Councillors faced with decisions on such developments have to balance the benefit of new jobs against the impact on small shops and the town centre.

BBC Scotland's local government correspondent Jamie McIvor examined the dilemma faced by councils.
