Scottish independence: Salmond reassures US over defence
First Minister Alex Salmond has sought to reassure the United States that an independent Scotland would be a reliable military ally.
In a speech in Washington DC, Mr Salmond said Nato membership should be a "cornerstone" of Scottish defence.
Kurt Volker, a former US ambassador to Nato, has said the SNP's commitment to remove nuclear weapons from an independent Scotland would cause concern in Washington.
