Applecross aims to be energy self-sufficient

The Highland village of Applecross is aiming to become one of the first communities in the UK to bypass the national grid and power all local homes and businesses directly from its own hydro scheme.

Private wires would be used to supply electricity to individual premises.

Organisers hope it will lead to a lower energy bills and reduced dependency on big energy firms.
