Scottish referendum: Salmond's career in politics
Alex Salmond's career in SNP politics spans more than 40 years.
From his days as a member of the Federation of Student nationalists at St Andrews University to the 2011 election when he led his party to the first majority government at Holyrood and spearheaded the "Yes" campaign in the referendum on Scottish independence.
Just hours after Scotland rejected independence, Mr Salmond announced he would resign as first minister and would also step down as the leader of the Scottish National Party.
