Jo Cox death: Nicola Sturgeon's horror at 'brutal senseless' death

Nicola Sturgeon has spoken of her horror at the "brutal and senseless murder" of Jo Cox who died on Thursday.

The first minister said the British-Irish Council, which she had just hosted, would be inspired by the Batley and Spen MP to "rededicate ourselves to the notion of public service as a force for good".

The 26th meeting of the council opened with a minute's silence for the 41-year-old who was shot and stabbed after she attended a constituency meeting in West Yorkshire.

A 52-year-old man, named locally as Tommy Mair, has been arrested.
