Nelson Mandela archive: His thanks to Wales for support
Kayley Thomas looks back at the life of Nelson Mandela, including a visit to Cardiff in 1998 when he was given the freedom of the city.
President Mandela had paid tribute to the response of the Welsh people to the discrimination against non-whites that had existed in South Africa.
"When the call for the international isolation of apartheid went out to the world, the people of Wales responded magnificently," he said.
Former Welsh Secretary Peter Hain, an anti-apartheid campaigner who was brought up in South Africa, said the country had lost a "unique man".
