Autumnwatch's Iolo Williams: 'Despair' at gannet injury

A litter problem around Grassholm Island off the Pembrokeshire coast has sparked a welfare mission to free dozens of seabirds entangled in debris.

Wildlife presenter Iolo Williams has been to the island for the BBC2 Autumnwatch programme on Thursday to help some of the birds trapped in bits of plastic which end up floating on the sea's surface.

The island is home to 40,000 gannets but because they gather nesting material from the surface of the sea it tends to be fishing nets, bits of polythene and parcel ties.

Iolo finds one of the gannets which is so badly injured by netting one of its feet is virtually amputated.

You can see more about the gannets on Grassholm on Autumnwatch on BBC2 on Thursday 30 October at 20:00 GMT.
