Nepal earthquake: 'We saw the ground move', says survivor

A climber on Mount Everest who survived the Nepal earthquake says he watched the ground move while 23,000ft up.

Mike Hopkins, 56, from Cardiff, was attempting to be the oldest Welsh person to reach the summit.

He had reached Camp 1 when the 7.8 magnitude tremor struck.

"It was a weird sensation, I have never come across anything like it in my life," he told BBC Wales.

Experienced mountaineer Mr Hopkins, who arrived home on Saturday, said it was too soon to decide whether he would return to Everest.

More than 2,300 people died in the earthquake on 25 April with 17 killed around the base of the world's highest mountain.
