Pupils forge poppies for new WWI memorial in Belgium

Schoolchildren have been helping to forge a new World War One memorial which will be erected in Belgium.

Pupils from Hafodwenog Primary School, Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Bro Myrddin in Carmarthenshire and Ysgol Y Login Fach in Swansea have been making steel poppies under the guidance of blacksmith Andrew Rowe.

The poppies will form part of a new cenotaph in Ypres, Flanders.

Standing at 23ft (7m) tall, the metal slab of steel will feature the image of a single Flanders poppy.

At its base will be a field of 2016 steel poppies, handcrafted by blacksmiths worldwide.
