War bulletin: Final push on Mametz Wood
As the battle of the Somme raged, one corner of it had particular significance to Wales.
By the morning of 12 July 1916, the final British push on Mametz Wood was nearing its end, but the cost had been huge.
The army had suffered more than 4,000 casualties, but those details were not yet being released. Heavily involved in the fighting was the 38th (Welsh) Division.
Some families lost multiple members, including relatives of former Welsh rugby international Gareth Thomas, whose great uncles Edward and William Thomas, pictured, both died in the fighting.
So with tight control on what was being reported from the front, what might have been in the news of Wales 100 years ago?
