Letters piled up in Cardiff during 1971 postal strike
A historical building could be empty for six years while Cardiff city centre is redeveloped around it.
The former post office on Westgate Street, Cardiff, has been empty since tenant BT moved out, even though its lease runs until 2023.
It was the hub of services in the city until a new base was created in 1983.
Between January and March 1971, strike action was called by postal workers demanding a rise of up to 20%. They then walked out when a lower offer was made.
This archive footage from January 1971 shows letters piled up at the sorting office.
