Bedsore challenge faces Welsh patients and hospitals

Two firms in Wales are hoping they can help offer new hi-tech solutions to tackle the costly problem of bedsores..

Treating wounds caused by issues such as pressure ulcers costs the Welsh NHS at least 10% of its annual budget - £600m.

One Wrexham-based mattress company has devised a system that can move a patient every 10 minutes, to reduce the risks, while a firm in Swansea is using 3D cameras to measure and monitor wounds.

Paula Lawrence, a specialist nurse at Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board, said bedsores can be a particular problem for elderly patients.
