Middle East leaders 'tackle core issues' in Egypt talks

The American Middle East envoy, George Mitchell, has said the Israeli and Palestinian leaders have begun a serious discussion on core issues of the conflict between their peoples.

The two sides are meeting for talks in the Egyptian resort of Sharm-el-Sheikh.

The question of Israeli settlements is one of many contentious issues but the US secretary of state Hillary Clinton says "the time is ripe" for a deal.

Jon Leyne reports.
