NYC mayor: Prepare for worst case

Mayor Michael Bloomberg has told New Yorkers that they must "prepare for the worst case" and is warning people to evacuate low-lying parts of the city before Hurricane Irene arrives.

A quarter of a million people live in such areas and authorities are moving people out of hospitals and nursing homes thought to be at risk from the storm.

Hurricane Irene has already made landfall on the US east coast, packing winds of more than 85 mph (140km/h), as it hit North Carolina.
