Greek austerity protesters on streets of Athens

Greek unions are holding demonstrations in central Athens in a protest over ever-deeper austerity measures being applied as the government struggles to avoid a catastrophic default.

Across Greece public transport is paralysed, flights are cancelled, schools and courts are closed, and hospitals are operating only an emergency service.

The BBC's Mark Lowen reports from Athens.
