Ukraine crisis: Diplomatic effort increases

Diplomatic activity has begun to increase in Ukraine with both the US and European Union showing their support for the country's sovereignty.

The US Secretary of State, John Kerry, arrived in the capital for talks to defuse the crisis while EU foreign ministers threatened to increase sanctions against Russia.

President Putin has warned the West that imposing sanctions against Russia will backfire.

Gavin Hewitt reports from Kiev.
