Ivory Coast: 'Countdown has started' for Gbagbo says UN

The United Nations has said ''the life of the civilian population must be preserved'' while there is fighting in Abidjan, the main city in Ivory Coast.

Hamadoun Toure, spokesman for the UN's special representative for Ivory Coast, added the ''countdown has started'' for Laurent Gbagbo, presidential rival to the UN-backed president, Alassane Ouattara.
