Would Niger take in Col Gaddafi?

A large, heavily armed convoy of vehicles carrying cash and gold has crossed Libya's southern border into neighbouring Niger.

It is thought key figures close to Col Gaddafi may have been trying to flee the country, though this has been denied by the authorities in Niger.

As long as Col Gaddafi is at large he and those close to him are a real threat to Libya's future stability.

Rumours that he might have escaped are being watched very closely.

James Robbins reports.
