Battle for Sirte and Bani Walid

Anti-Gaddafi forces have stepped up their assaults on Sirte and Bani Walid, two of the final strongholds of the ousted Libyan leader.

Gunfire and explosions have been heard around Bani Walid's hills and valleys, 180km (110 miles) south of Tripoli, as tanks and trucks move on the town.

Fighters are also approaching Sirte, hours after an advance was forced back by Gaddafi loyalists.
