Kenyan Nobel laureate Wangari Maathai dies

The Kenyan Nobel laureate Wangari Maathai has died in hospital in Nairobi, at the age of 71, while undergoing treatment for cancer.

In 2004, Ms Maathai became the first African woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize.

She was honoured for her work in promoting conservation, women's rights and transparent government.

Ms Maathai was elected as an MP in 2002 and served as a minister in the Kenyan government for a time. She also founded the Green Belt Movement which has planted more than 20 million trees in Africa.
