Service marks Archbishop Desmond Tutu's 80th birthday

South Africa's Nobel Peace laureate Archbishop Desmond Tutu has been celebrating his 80th birthday.

Hundreds of people attended a service at St George's Cathedral in Cape Town.

Among the congregation was the pop star Bono from U2 and Graca Machel, the wife of the former President Nelson Mandela.

One notable absence from the celebrations was his fellow Peace Prize winner, the Dalai Lama.

The South African government failed to grant the Tibetan spiritual leader a visa.

Rev Michael Weeder, the Dean of St George's paid tribute to the archbishop before the congregation gave a rendition of Happy Birthday.
