How serious is Boko Haram threat to Nigeria?

The United States embassy in Nigeria says it has information that Islamist group Boko Haram is planning attacks in the capital, Abuja.

The warning has been issued while residents in the northern towns of Maiduguri and Damaturu are coming to terms with a wave of shootings and bombings over the weekend that killed at least 100 people.

The attacks, which were claimed by Boko Haram, have cast a shadow on the Muslim Eid al-Adha feast.

How grave is the US warning? Peter Lewis, a Professor of African Studies at the Johns Hopkins University, gave his assessment to the BBC's Network Africa programme.
