Johannesburg university stampede kills one

One person has died after a stampede broke out among crowds of people trying to enrol at a university in the South African city of Johannesburg.

Tuesday's incident occurred as students queued in the hope of securing a last-minute spot at the institution.

There is intense competition for higher education places in South Africa, where 180,000 high school graduates are expected to be turned away from South Africa's nine top universities this year, according to the Times newspaper.

The BBC's Andrew Harding has more details.
